In a bid to extract the maximum benefit from FOGO (Fruit Organics & Garden Organics) waste from kerbside collection, Ararat Rural City Council has upgraded and extended its service agreement with Gaia. This move marks another step in Ararat’s progressive initiative to address environmental concerns and promote sustainable waste management practices including reducing “waste miles”.
The organic waste management partnership entails comprehensive services including operation, maintenance, laboratory testing, and remote monitoring of temperature levels. The remote monitoring ensures that the composting process adheres to Australian standards that are set to ensure pasteurisation is achieved, thereby eliminating pathogens and ensuring weed seeds do not germinate in the compost.
By processing FOGO waste swiftly and effectively, the system will yield high-quality compost that can be repurposed for the benefit of the community.

The system in this case study was installed in November 2018 as a 12-month research and development project to establish viability of an anaerobic digestion plant designed to convert dairy effluent to energy and minimise odour.
