The recently released annual Bioenergy report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) has reinforced that bioenergy is a game-changer in the journey towards global climate neutrality. As a waste management and biogas solution provider, we are pleased to observe the growing recognition of bioenergy’s important role in transforming our energy systems. Countries in Europe invest heavily in bioenergy. For example, Bioenergy represents a total of 60% of Sweden’s renewable energy supply and is valued for being a dispatchable energy source.
According to the IEA roadmap titled “Net Zero Emissions by 2050,” bioenergy is projected to contribute around 18% of the total energy supply by 2050. This shows the significant role that bioenergy will play in achieving carbon neutrality within the global energy system.
Bioenergy has the potential to reduce fossil fuel consumption, provide negative emissions, and contribute to a circular bioeconomy, making it a key solution for addressing the challenges of climate change and promoting sustainable energy systems. The report also emphasises the importance of sustainability governance, biomass mobilization, policy frameworks, and flexibility to ensure the successful integration of bioenergy in the energy transition.
The report is available on the IEA Bioenergy website.
