Earlier this year, in April, Gaia EnviroTech secured a significant contract from the Victorian Government for the implementation of Anaerobic Digestion (AD) technology and related services at the Ellinbank SmartFarm located in Gippsland, Victoria. The project, aimed at supporting sustainable agricultural practices within the dairy and livestock industries, is set for completion later this year and includes various stages, including design, construction, installation, and commissioning of the AD plant.
In collaboration with sister company Gekko Systems, the Gaia EnviroTech team has made significant progress, with several crucial milestones already achieved. These accomplishments include the procurement of necessary equipment, the plant design, civil engineering planning, and electrical system design.
One of the primary objectives of this project is to reduce the SmartFarm’s carbon footprint. The AD technology will reduce methane emissions arising from the decomposition of organic matter, particularly manure, as well as off-setting the farms mains electricity use, resulting in the generation of carbon certificates. The project will play a crucial role in fostering sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices, with a significant positive impact on the region.

The system in this case study was installed in November 2018 as a 12-month research and development project to establish viability of an anaerobic digestion plant designed to convert dairy effluent to energy and minimise odour.
